Willis Eugene “Gene” Cooper, 82, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday April 21, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. in Southwood Healthcare Center. He was born August 31, 1929 in Vigo County to Willis Aaron Cooper and Beulah G. (McFadden) Cooper. He was a retired roofer for Lough Brothers Roofing and a longtime member of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers. He is survived by 4 daughters: Theresa Walters and her husband Delbert of Terre Haute, Wanda Lawson and her husband Michael of Terre Haute, Janice Beasley and her husband Paul of Terre Haute, and Jeanie Jewell and her husband Brian of Farmersburg; 2 sons: Steven Cooper and his wife Cheri of Evansville and Wayne Cooper and his wife Tammie of Terre Haute; 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Gene loved to dance and was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Eagles Lodge, and the VFW. Visitation will be Monday April 23, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. Funeral services will be on Tuesday April 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor David Lowe officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Alva L. May, Jr.

Alva Lawrence May, Jr. 84 of Terre Haute, passed away Friday April 20, 2012 at 1:10 a.m. in Springhill Village. He was a retired engineer for WTWO-TV and was a school bus driver for many years in Sullivan County. Alva was born August 4, 1927 in Dennison, IL to Alva Lawrence May and Maude Fern (Staley) May. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vera Josephine (Pullum) May; 2 daughters: Diane Dean and her husband Thomas of Pimento, IN and Julie May and her companion Dale Hopkins of Terre Haute; a son: Tim May and his wife Michelle of Farmersburg; a sister: Jean Ann Greggs; a brother: Russell May of Virginia; 14 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Michael May. Alva was a United States Marine veteran of WW II, was a member of Farmersburg United Methodist Church, sang with the Barbershop Quartet and was a Ham Radio Operator. Visitation will be Monday April 23, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. with funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Don Ransford officiating. Burial will be in Farmersburg West Lawn Cemetery. If friends so desire,

Pauline White Dishon, 93, of Terre Haute, went home to be with the Lord at 4:45 PM on Sunday, April 15, 2012 in Davis Gardens. She was born in Terre Haute on March 20, 1919 to Shannon White and Maude Haddix White. Pauline married Arnold Dishon on December 19, 1937, and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1994. She is survived by her children Shirley and Bob Meyers of Colorado, Marcey and Erven Anderson of Terre Haute, and Ken and Nancy Dishon of Arizona. Also surviving are two brothers, Shannon and Florence White of Goshen, IN and Richard and Jennifer White of Ohio, as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Faith Wesleyan Church on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 12 Noon, with Pastor Dan Gormong officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon in the church. The family requests memorial contributions be made to either Faith Wesleyan Church or Hospice, in her memory. Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Springhill Chapel.

Marianne Deis “Poki”

Marianne A. Deis “Poki”, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away on April 18, 2012. She was born on March 29, 1927 to Edward and Catherine (Cuccinella) Pocoroba. After graduating from Bloomfield Senior High School in Bloomfield, NJ, Mrs. Deis studied ballet and worked for Columbia Artists in New York City. She also worked as a model at the Newark Artists Coop. After moving to the midwest with her husband, she operated a ballet school in Bowling Green, Ohio and later studied art at Indiana University. After retiring to Terre Haute, she spent many happy hours cultivating her flower garden which she enjoyed sharing with her friends and family who will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Mr. Jean P. Deis, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Gardner, her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Deis, her daughter, Ms. Maria Deis, one grandson, five granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IN. The family has entrusted DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive, with making arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718

George William Alsop Jr. 85, of Terre Haute passed away on April 15, 2012 at 7:10 a.m. He was born on November 8, 1926 to George William Alsop Sr. and Dorothy (Sevier) Alsop. George served his country in the United States Navy. He also served his city locally in Terre Haute. He was a former City Councilman and a Precinct Committeeman for District 4. He was faithful throughout his life to the Democratic party. George retired from the Terre Haute Police Department, where he was a Lieutenant. He was also a member of the VFW #972. George loved the outdoors and appreciated nature and animals. He was a generous and caring person with a gentle soul. He was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.
George is survived by his wife Rita Alsop; sons John Alsop, Fred Decker his wife Pam, and Kevin Coleman his wife Kathy; sisters Sue Greggs, her husband Dave and Mary Jukes; grandchildren Leah, Carly, Caitlyn, Patrick, Matthew, and Emma; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; son Daniel “Michael” Alsop; former wife Phyllis Alsop; sister Eileen Downey; and brother-in-law Bill Jukes.
Funeral services for George have been scheduled for Thursday April 19, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive. Pastor Rodger Bear will be officiating. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 18, 2012. Paul E. Corey, 89, of Terre Haute passed away on April 13, 2012 at 8:05 p.m. He was born on September 19, 1922 to John Wesley Corey and Goldie Marie (Welsh) Corey. Paul was a WWII Army Veteran. He was a member of the 8th Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years, and served as a deacon for over 50 years. He was also a member of the VFW. Paul was a devoted family man. He believed in putting church first, family second work third and sports fourth. Paul coached Biddy basketball at the Boys Club, basketball at his church, little league, babe ruth, and umpired.
He is preceded in death by his wife Norma Corey, whom he married July 7, 1946; his parents; son-in-law Jim Duggins; and brothers Elsworth Corey, Kenneth Corey, and Raymond Corey. He is survived by two sons, Don Corey (& his significant other Linda May) of Terre Haute, Scott Corey (& wife Beryl) of Nashville, TN, two daughters, Paula Duggins of Terre Haute, and Nancy Gilbert (& husband David, Sr.) of Indianapolis. Also surviving are four grandchildren; Kelley Duggins, Andrew Corey, Denae Ramos, and David M. Gilbert, Jr., as well as six great grandchildren; Zach Duggins, Summer Ramos, Eliana Corey, Silas Corey, Aiden Gilbert, and Andrew May; brothers and sister James Corey, Robert Corey, and Ethel Waylan and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday April 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive. Scott Corey, Paul’s youngest son, will be officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday April 16, 2012 from 4:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to 8th Ave. Baptist Church, in his memory.

Mabel D. Burdette, 56 of Shelburn, passed away at 9:33 PM on Thursday, April 12, 2012 in her residence. She was born in Madison, IN on August 10, 1955 to Okey E. Ashworth and Donna Poyser Ashworth. She worked in Quality Control for S.C.A.R.C. Industries. She is survived by her Mother, Donna Ashworth, her daughter, Lavonna Russell, and two grandchildren, Sean Pigg and John Forbes, as well as one sister, Pamela Rouhe. She was preceded in death by her father, Okey E. Ashworth, and by one brother, Steven Douglas Bartels. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Hymera and a member of Job’s Daughters. Cremation has been chosen, with arrangements under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Alan Raye Hood, 67, of Terre Haute passed away on Wednesday April 11, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Danville, IL. He was born July 29, 1944 in Terre Haute to Willis Hood and Minnie (Bluher) Hood. Alan has designed clothes in India, had a leather shop in Venus Park in Los Angeles and had his own workshop in Terre Haute doing custom woodworking. He is survived by his wife: Donna (Johnson) Hood; 3 step-daughters: Kelly Carter and her husband Jonathan of Terre Haute, Kerrie White of Terre Haute, and Kimberly Story of Barbaraville, KY; a step-son: Kevin Joy and his wife Connie of Terre Haute; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a sister: Beverly Leonard,  everal nieces and nephews and his 3 canine companions: Precious, Katio, and Rocky. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother: Willis Hood II, and a nephew: Stan Mathers. Alan was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of the American Legion Post #104. He attended college in Amsterdam and was proud of the fact that he
had traveled the world. Visitation will be Saturday April 14, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors being provided by American Legion Post #104.

Dorothy Mildred Turner, 87, of Farmersburg, died at 5:10 a.m. on April 11, 2012. She was born on March 28,1925, to Charles Frank Hamrick and Wannetta Raley Hamrick.
She was a homemaker and a very proud and loyal spouse of her career Air Force husband, Emerson Turner, who preceded her in death on March 9, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents and infant sister Mary Virginia and brother Charles Hamrick Jr.; daughter and son-in-law Connie and Gerry Patrick; and great granddaughter Kaitlin Patrick. Survivors include her two sons, Stephen Turner and his wife Leanna of Terre Haute; and Mike Turner and his wife Denene of Papillion, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Tracy (Kurt) Brinegar; Mike (Becky) Patrick; Chad (Kristen) Turner; Angie (Dan) Clark; Ryan (Angela) Turner; Kristi (Andy) Higham; Leah Turner and Ian Turner; fourteen great grandchildren, Kelsey, Kourtney, and Mikie Patrick; Kaylee and Taylor Clark; Brayden and Peyton Turner; Ethan, Kylie, and Lannah Klaasen and Carson Turner; Mallory and Parker Higham; Bryson Brinegar, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mildred enjoyed spending time with her sons and grandchildren and was an avid fan of the Indiana Pacers. She could always be found cheering and watching them on television.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Services will be held at DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 1:00 PM, with her nephew, Rev. John Turner officiating.
Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery, Farmersburg. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, April 14, 2012 in DeBaun Springhill Chapel.

Gilbert Leroy Loser, 63, of Terre Haute, passed away at 9:35 AM on Tuesday, April, 10, 2012 in Royal Oaks Health Care Center. He was born in Gary, IN on April 4, 1949 to Gilbert S. Loser and Betty Gambill Loser. He is survived by his mother, Betty Loser, two brothers, Ron Loser and Dennis Loser, as well as one sister, Linda Easton. Other survivors include his nieces and nephews; Tammy Easton, Jason Easton, Scott Easton, Heather Loser, Dustin Loser, and Brianna Loser. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert S. Loser.
