Walter "Walt" Courtney

Walter Courtney, 91, of Terre Haute went to be with the Lord August 18, 2017 at 5:45 a.m.  He was born March 28, 1926 in Sullivan County to Joseph and Martha (Simmers) Courtney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ouida (Price) Courtney, whom he married October 10, 1948. He was also preceded in death by his son, Lloyd; and his six brothers and six sisters.

Walter is survived by his grandson, Michael Courtney of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews; many wonderful friends and family members; and very special friends, Brian and Kathy Cottom.  

Walt, as he liked to be called, was a 1944 graduate of Shelburn High School. He was a member of the Terre Haute Church of God, the El Shaddai Emmaus Community of Illiana and Senior Seekers Bible Study Group. He was also a member of the International Society of Poets, having written poems about his home town of Shelburn and growing up with his Dad, who was crippled in one of the many coal mines in the area. Most of his poetry was biblical based. Walt retired from Public Service of Indiana Wabash River Generating Station. He was a volunteer at Union Hospital in the Chaplain’s Office and in the Transitional Care Unit. He was also a Lay Minister doing services in as many as nine nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Walt received many awards for his volunteer service; The Hospitality Award from Union Hospital, Volunteer of the Week from WBAK Television, Volunteer of the Year Award from Indiana Health Care for the local area and the Terre Award from the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and Tribune Star. He was Past President of the Dalmatian Highlanders Chapter of Coachmen Caravan Camping Club. Walt loved to read the Bible, go to church and work for his Lord and Savior Jesus; he enjoyed fish frys  and singing gospel music.

Services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 East Springhill Drive, Terre Haute, Indiana with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Bishop Dennis Sanders will be officiating; burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
