Virginia Belle (Strain) Garrett

Virginia Belle Garrett, 86, of Terre Haute, beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt passed away on March 28th surrounded by her loving family.

Virginia was born June 28, 1931 in Seelyville, Indiana to Clarence and Lottie Strain. She married her high school sweetheart, Elmer Garrett, on September 18, 1948 and worked with him building homes in addition to working at the Lost Creek Elementary cafeteria where her daughters attended school. After becoming a young widow, Virginia became an underwriter, working at Forrest Sherer Insurance for more than 18 years. Once retired, she became affectionately known as “Grandma Babysitter” or simply “Great” taking care of her great-grandchildren during the work day which was her favorite job in the world!

Virginia was a 4 time cancer survivor, a strong woman of faith and a long-time member of Calvary Full Gospel in Seelyville, and Cary Church of God in North Carolina.  She loved to spend time with her family, cook, sew, crochet, and watch Lawrence Welk.  We will treasure the loving memories we have with her and will always be thankful for the lasting impact she had in our lives.

Virginia is rejoicing in heaven with her husband, Elmer, daughter, Deanna, grandson, Brent Barbour, son-in-law, Larry Barbour, parents, sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Robert Hann, who all preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Pam Barbour, grandchildren, Julie Aders (Andy), Chrissy Barbour (Neil Morley), and Melissa Garrett, great-grandchildren, Brittany Marshall (Steven), Alissa Aders, Cassidy Aders, Catelin Barbour-Morley, Emma Barbour-Morley, great-great grandchild, Luisa Marshall, nieces, Ginny Callahan, Maria Langdon, and Mindi Hann, and many great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr., on Monday, April 2 at 2:00pm with Pastor John Campbell officiating. Visitation will be 12:00-2:00pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn Cemetery.
