Tracey Denise Mercer-Cox

Tracey Denise Mercer-Cox, 53, gained her place in Heaven’s garden on Monday, August 19, 2019.  Her unexpected departure has left a void that will never be filled.

Tracey was loved by many, adored and cherished by all who knew her.  She had this uncanny ability to make others feel at home whenever she was near.

Tracey, or Brat (with a capital B), as her mom called her, could turn a patch of dirt into a remarkable display of color, worthy enough to be on the cover of every major magazine.  Tracey and Steve worked their yard tirelessly and with love, so that their little piece of Earth was laid out like a welcome mat for others to enjoy and come home to when they needed a little bit of Heaven here on Earth.  Whether it be cocktails, conversations, cookouts or just “patio time”, Tracey and Steve always had time for family and friends.

Tracey had many wonderful qualities; so many amazing qualities that the list is too long for me to list them all, but here are a few that made her so uniquely one of a kind.  Drive, determination, toughness, grit, kindness, creativeness, compassionate, elegance, style, and class, independence to perfection and loyalty like no other.  She could give advice when needed or just listen if you needed an ear to vent.  She could be stern and loving at the same time.  You always knew where you stood with her and never doubted how much she cared.  Her laugh and smile were infectious, her style and class were impeccable, and her uniqueness made her unforgettable. 

Tracey loved, oh man did she love!  She loved you with all of her heart.  She loved her husband and soulmate, Steve like no other.  She loved her momma Norma, her in-laws Peggy and Harold, her best friends Dori, Yvonne, Susan, and Rianna.  She loved all the kids that came with this bunch.  Tracey loved her step-children Matt and Hanna, and her grandchildren Zaidyn and Nellie.  She loved her dogs Jessi and Saffy and her heavenly dogs Dude and Angel.  She loved her clients and their animals.  She knew she had a responsibility to provide the best service she was capable of providing.  As owner of Furry Friends she took great pride in demonstrating her love for them every day.  Whether it be a nail trim, a shampoo, or a rockin’ haircut the dogs walked out of her shop a little more sassy- like her!  She would end the groom with a spritz of clean and attach a bandana around the dog’s neck, unique to the dog, a holiday, or the time of year.  There was no one like her!

Tracey had a kindness about her that was demonstrated by thoughtful acts of caring.  Whether it be a small gathering of friends in her impeccably designed house, or a large gathering that took place on her beautifully landscaped yard that she and Steve nurtured for others to enjoy, Tracey made sure you felt like you belonged there.

Tracey could throw a party like no other! It didn’t matter if that party was for four or forty, it did not matter to her.  It was always and simply the best she could give.  Tracey adored her home, the home and sanctuary that she and Steve created.  Their little piece of “Heaven on Earth”, her garden, Steve’s tomatoes-they showed love for all they held dear to them by giving of themselves every day.

Tracey had a flair about her.  A flair unmatched by others.  She could take a napkin, fold it a different way and it became a work of art.  She could hang a milk crate on a wall next to a wire shelf and throw in a sprig of greenery and it would look like a perfectly designed wall display.  She could take a tree stump, throw on a pot of flowers and corn stalks and you would believe that Martha Stewart came over for lessons on how to decorate.  She could shop the clearance rack-anywhere- 75% off, and she would look like a million dollars.  To say she had a gift about herself is a complete understatement of what made Tracey-Tracey.  She was definitely one of a kind.

Tracey will be missed!  There will not be a day that goes by that someone isn’t thinking about her, missing her, wishing she was still here, and loving her.  There won’t be a day that goes by that when you pass a beautifully landscaped yard your thoughts will turn to Tracey.  She was something to enjoy, like no other.  There will always be a few less flowers on the Earth now.  Tracey was something special.

Tracey is survived by her loving husband, Steve Cox and their fur babies Jessi and Saffy; her mother and step-father Norma and Everett Shaw, her in-laws Peggy and Harold Cox all of Terre Haute, Indiana.  She is also survived by her stepson Matthew Davis, step-daughter Hanna (Cox) Passmore and her husband Gary Passmore.  She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Zaidyn and Nelliw Passmore of Evans, Georgia.  Tracey’s greatest joy was hearing the grandkids call her Mimi.  She is also survived by a brother-in-law Mark Cox of Westfield, Indiana, a sister-in-law Marilyn Cox Manley Splitgerber and her husband Douglas Splitgerber of Crown Point, Indiana.  In addition many nieces and nephews; Ryan and Laura Manley, Chris and Cecelia Manley, Eric and Amanda Manley, Megan and Ben Barrick, Sara and Joe Heiser, and Christina Cox.  Tracey also leaved behind her devoted best friends Dori Myers and her children Brogan and Brody Myers; Yvonne Crum Jenkins and her husband Ronnie Jenkins and their children Justin Crum, Jake and Jenna Jenkins; Susan and Steve Lohman; and Rianna Ash and Jacob Tingley and their daughters Harper Mary Hauser and Tatum Tingley.

Tracey will be missed by all who knew her and were lucky enough to call her friend.  In lieu of flowers, Steve and the family requests that donations be made in Tracey’s name to the Terre Haute Humane Shelter.  Their address is:  1811 S. Fruitridge Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel.  Services will follow visitation.  Online condolences may be made to www.debaunfuneralhomes.com.
