Susan Mary Berta

Susan Mary Berta, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday May 22, 2024 at her residence. Dr. Susan Berta was a professor at Indiana State University, Department of Earth and Environmental Systems, and retired in 2021.

She started her career at ISU in 1986 and was the department chairperson from 2002-2009.  She was also the Interim Coordinator of the Science Education Program from 2005-2007. She published over 25 journal articles and reports, and supervised the research of 13 graduate students. 

Susan was born July 29, 1957 in Flint, Michigan to Julius and Mary (Walsh) Berta. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Kopko and Maureen Bedford (David); brothers, Michael Berta (Gail), David Berta (Margaret), and Mark Berta (Shannon Moriarity); and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sue's heart belonged to the Terre Haute Humane Society, where she volunteered for over 30 years.  She also served as a member of their Board of Directors. There is a designated website, in her name, for donations to the Humane Society.  Please consider this in lieu of flowers Donate
