Sister Joan Zlogar died on July 14 in Mother Theodore Hall. She was born on April 10, 1930 in Joliet, IL to John and Frances Stiglin Zlogar.
Sister Joan entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1950 and was given the name Sr. Joseph Bernard. She professed Final Vows Jan. 23, 1958. She earned a bachelor's degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Indiana University, both in business. Of her 70 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 30 years as a business teacher and school administrator in Indiana, Illinois, and Washington, DC. Her teaching was interrupted by six years given to being treasurer of St. Gabriel Province in Indianapolis. When she retired from teaching in 1987, she served five years as assistant to the treasurer for the Cenacle Sisters in Chicago. She then came to the Motherhouse where she gave 15 years as Planned Giving Manager for the Mission Advancement Office. Retiring in 2012, she volunteered at the Wabash Valley Health Center and Union Hospital, and also coordinated the alumnae organization of St. Columbkille High School in Chicago, where she taught early in her career. Beginning in 2019, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Joan loved social interaction, both one-on-one and in large groups. She was a faithful friend to many. A woman of deep prayer, she brought a loving concern to all she met as well as an active concern for people suffering from injustice or misfortune.
Sister Joan is survived by a brother, James Zlogar of Arlington Heights, IL. She is preceded in death by a brother John (Jack) Zlogar. Due to the restrictions on group meetings, the funeral service on July 22 is not open to the public. Because she requested cremation, her burial in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence will be at a later date. The DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
