Sister Suzanne Smith died on Feb. 3, 2021, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Feb. 26, 1934 in Washington, DC, to George F. and Christine Mitchell Smith and was baptized Suzanne Elizabeth.
Sister Suzanne entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 30, 1954 and received the name Sister Louis. She professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1961.
She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in chemistry, a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Indiana State University.
Of her 67 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 20 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Washington, DC.
In 1977, she was asked to come to the Motherhouse to work in the General Business Office. There she held several positions including Director of Finance from 1993 to1999. Upon retiring from that position, she volunteered her service in several offices, both at the Motherhouse and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She was Coordinator of the Our Lady of Providence Shrine from 2006 to 2014.
Sister Suzanne brought a calm, laid-back presence to any situation. She was a faithful, trustworthy friend. She was well-read, enjoyed conversation with sisters and friends, loved exploring new places, and never missed a chance to attend an opera.
Sister Suzanne is survived by cousins.
Due to the restrictions on group meetings, her wake and funeral on Feb. 22 are not open to the public. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
