Sister Margaret Nau Obituary

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS - Sister Margaret Nau died on Nov. 10, 2020, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Nov. 7, 1939 in Hammond, IN to Thomas and Evelyn Helling Nau and was baptized Margaret Mary.
Sister Peggy, as she was known to all, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 18, 1961 and received the name Sister Jude Ann. She professed Final Vows Nov. 15, 1969.
She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and master's degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Loyola University, Chicago.

Of her 59 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 12 years. She taught in Terre Haute at Sacred Heart School in the 1966-67 academic year and at Schulte High School from 1967 to 1969 and then at Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, IN for 9 years.
In 1978, Sister Peggy moved to parish work, serving for eight years at the Catholic Indian Mission in Fort Yates, ND. She then served as pastoral associate for four years at Precious Blood Parish in Owensboro, KY. Becoming certified as a chaplain in 1995, she ministered as hospital chaplain at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY for seven years and then at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL for 12 years.
Due to health issues, she returned to the Motherhouse in 2013 where she gave service in a variety of ways. Beginning in 2017, she committed herself totally to the ministry of payer.
Sister Peggy was a generous, caring person. She brought a healing presence to those to whom she ministered as well as to her sisters, family, and friends. She enjoyed social gatherings and always brought an element of fun to any group.
Sister is survived by a brother, Thomas Nau of River Grove, IL; and three sisters, Mary Ann Johnson of Salisbury, NC, Kathleen Caffigan of Chicago, and Sally Smith of Libertyville, IL.
Due to the restrictions on group meetings, no public wake and funeral is scheduled. Because of her choice of cremation, she will be buried at a later date.
