Sister Emily Walsh

Sister Emily Walsh died on Jan. 26, 2021 in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Saginaw, MI, on Sept. 21, 1930 to Charles and Frances Wolfarth Walsh and was baptized Mary Emily.
Sister Emily entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1953 and was given the name Sister Mary Francine. She professed Final Vows Jan. 23, 1960. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree in library science from Catherine Spalding University. Of her 68 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 12 years in elementary and high schools in Indiana. She taught at St. Ann, Terre Haute, from 1955-62. In 1967, she moved to Washington DC where she served as library administrator of Immaculata Preparatory High School and Immaculata College. In 1975 she was named library administrator at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and in 1992, moved to the position of reference librarian there. Retiring in 2001, she coordinated the Resource Center at the Motherhouse. Beginning in 2020, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Emily was a woman with a calm and gentle demeanor that put people at ease. She enjoyed being with others, always ready to join a group for a house party, a meal out, or adventurous travel. She was gifted with a keen mind and sense of determination that showed themselves in many ways but most memorably in her skill at the bridge table.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a twin sister Sr. Leona Walsh, SP and a brother, Frank Walsh. Due to the restrictions on group meetings, her wake and funeral on Feb. 8 are not open to the public. Because she has opted for cremation, her burial will be at a later date in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
