Sister Charles Van Hoy died on Jan. 27, 2021, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Nov. 2, 1929 in Bloomington, IN to William F. and Sarah Ann Sheetz Van Hoy and was given the name Marjorie Mae.
Sister Charles entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1949 and professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1956. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree in library science from Catherine Spalding University. Of her 72 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher and school librarian for 32 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Washington, DC. In 1983 she began ten years of ministry as pastoral associate at St. Patrick and Holy Rosary Parishes in Indianapolis. In 1994, she returned to the Motherhouse where she was the director of activities for 12 years. Having retired, she served as a volunteer at Educational Family Services in West Terre Haute until its closing in 2014. Beginning in 2018, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Charles had sparkling eyes and a beautiful smile. These mirrored an inner gentleness and serenity. She was a faithful friend and generous minister, always ready to give service wherever needed.
Sister Charles is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Brown; and four brothers, William, Donald, Kenneth and Charles Van Hoy.
Due to the restrictions on group meetings, her wake and funeral are not open to the public. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 10.
