Robert Joseph Callahan

Robert “Bob” Joseph Callahan, 97, of Terre Haute passed away Monday, July 31, 2023, at Cobblestone Crossing.  He was born June 8, 1926, in St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana to Joseph Callahan and Eva Brown Callahan Caserotti.  Bob attended Concannon High School.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy Amphibious Forces during WWII in the South Pacific.  He married the love of his life Rita Kress September 4, 1948, and they were married 72 years before her passing on June 27, 2021.  Bob was a long-time member of St. Jospeh University Parish.  He was a car enthusiast, loved to feed and watch the birds while enjoying nature from his enclosed porch when living out at St. Mary’s Village.  Bob worked in auto sales for many years at Sycamore Chevrolet and Fuson Automotive.  He loved his pet cats, and they were great companions.  Bob cherished time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Thornton (Don) of Terre Haute, grandsons Nathan Thornton (Lauren) of Noblesville, Indiana, and Tyler Thornton (Kaylee) of Chicago, Illinois, great grandchildren Lucas Thornton, Eloise Thornton, and Lydia Thornton, brother-in-law Robert Kress, and several nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his wife Rita Callahan. 

The family would like to express their gratitude to Bob’s special caregiver and dear friend, Meleah Reed, and his long-time nurses at Cobblestone, Sara Wycoff, Amanda Waller, Amber Mesaeh, and Nikki Jewell.  In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Ouabache Valley Felines and Friends at 7300 East Devonald Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47805.  Private graveside services will be held at Calvary Cemetery.  Online condolences may be made to www.debaunfuneralhomes.com.
