On October 15, 2023, Heaven gained another Angel. Don Gaskins was born January 2, 1948, to Harry “Sonny” Gaskins and Shirley Mae Dennis. He was born in his grandmother’s house as the snow was too deep to get to the hospital. Dr. O’Dell came to them to deliver him.
Don went to Farmersburg School, then graduated from North Central High School in 1966. He went on to graduate from ISU in 1969 with a Math major and a Chemistry minor. He married his high school sweetheart, Rose Ann Minger in 1968. Not long after that, three daughters came along, Amy Lynn (1968), Lisa Eileen (1970), and then Christina Rey (1971).
Don enjoyed Studebakers with his dad, and they went to many National Studebaker Meets. He enjoyed playing softball for Pfizer and in the Sullivan Men’s League. Don coached his daughters and a granddaughter in Farmersburg Youth League of which he was President for many years. He worked at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for 34 years, retiring in 2004.
Don was very proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandson and was a spectator at many of their events over the years. He enjoyed watching IU basketball, Athletes Unlimited Softball, collegiate softball, and Westers, especially John Wayne.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, brother Mike Gaskins, and brother-in-law Mike Johnson.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, Rose Ann Gaskins, daughter Amy Lynn Alderton (Brandon Timmerman), Lisa Eileen Edington (Jeff), and Christina Rey Jordan; granddaughters Katanna Marie Massengill (Aaron), Haley Rey Jordan, Michayla Jo Edington (Braden Kruse), Rosemary Grace Alderton; grandsons Kyle Robert Dickson (Tori) and Samuel Dylan Alderton; great grandson Idris Michael Massengill, sister Margaret Ann Johnson, and brother Richard Sherman Gaskins, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 20, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Service will begin at the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in remembrance of Don can be made to Friends of Park at P.O. Box 244, Farmersburg, Indiana 47850.
