David Charles Smith, 80, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and formerly of Terre Haute and Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at his home surrounded by family. He was born August 7, 1943, to David Bernard Smith and Donna Pauline Smith. David was a lifetime member of St. Margaret Mary Church. He graduated from Ivy Tech with an associate degree in communications. David went on to work as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Police, retiring in 1982. Later he was appointed by the governor of Indiana as the Executive Director of the Integrated Public Safety Commission. He retired from the State in 2011. David was a Ham radio operator. Most of all he loved being with his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ramona Baratto Smith, his children Shirl Romero (David), Kelly Clark (Chris), David Smith, Jennifer Rady (Jeremy), and Stephen Smith (Priscilla); eleven grandchildren and their spouses, three great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister Sandra Surber, and sister-in-law Virginia Toppas. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 23, 2023, at St. Margaret Mary Church located at 2405 South 7th Street, Terre Haute from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
