Connie Elmore

Connie Elmore (née María Constanza Castro Castellanos Camelo Morales), 74, of Terre Haute, Indiana, died May 25, 2021.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Juan de Jesús and Clementina, and brother Juan. She is survived by her husband, Michael; a daughter, Jennifer Dawson (Michael); a son, John-Michael (Tara); sisters, Bertha Raquel Castro de Maurice (Pierre) of Switzerland and Margarita Castro de Ramirez (Humberto) of Colombia; brothers-in-law David Elmore (Sue) and Mark Elmore (Pam); and nieces and nephews in Colombia, Canada, Spain, Switzerland, and, of course, here in the United States.

Connie was born in Bogotá, Colombia on April 3, 1947. She graduated from Javeriana University with a degree in Education. She married her husband, Michael, in 1973.

Connie loved to teach. She began doing so at 14 years of age and never stopped. She taught Spanish at Indiana State University (1999 to present) and tutored English as a Second Language and Spanish. She was Assistant Director and Student Counselor for the English Language Institute at St. Mary-of-the- Woods College (1976–1981). Connie was Director and Instructor in her own proprietary school in the 80s and 90s, where she had students from Latin America and from the Middle East. She did volunteer work at several places, including Ryves Hall Youth Center.

Connie taught us all how to laugh and love and see the brighter side of life. She loved to help and support others, and we are all grateful for the wonderful moments we got to enjoy by her side. In addition to travel, cultural exchanges, and exercise and yoga, her passion was teaching. She received various teaching awards; her most prized awards were from student organizations (e.g., “Outstanding Dedication to First Year Student Academic Success”).

Visitation will be held at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church on June 1, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. A funeral service will be held immediately after the visitation, at 12:05 pm in St. Benedict Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. DeBaun Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. (Please bring a face mask, as they are still required at church.)

Connie nació en Bogotá, Colombia el 3 de abril de 1947. Se graduó de la Universidad Javeriana y obtuvo una Licenciatura en Educación. Contrajo matrimonio con Michael, en 1973.

A Connie le encantaba enseñar. Comenzó a los 14 años y nunca dejó de hacerlo. Enseñó español en la Universidad Estatal de Indiana (1999 hasta el presente) y dio clases particulares de inglés como segundo idioma y de español. Fue subdirectora y consejera estudiantil del English Language Institute en St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (1976–1981). Connie fue directora e instructora en su propio instituto en los años 80 y 90, donde acogió estudiantes de América Latina y del Medio Oriente. Hizo voluntariado en varios lugares, incluido el Ryves Hall Youth Center.

Connie nos enseñó a todos a reír, a amar y a ver siempre el lado bueno de la vida. Además de los viajes, los intercambios culturales, el ejercicio y el yoga, su pasión era la enseñanza, campo en el que recibió varios premios; entre los más preciados, aquellos que le fueron otorgados por organizaciones estudiantiles (por ejemplo, "Dedicación excepcional al éxito académico de los estudiantes de primer año").

La velación se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia Católica de San Benito el 1° de junio de 2021, de 10:00 a.m. a 12:00 p.m. Las exequias tendrán lugar inmediatamente después a las 12:05 pm en la misma Iglesia Católica de San Benito. Seguirá el entierro en el cementerio Calvary. Los preparativos del funeral están a cargo de la funeraria DeBaun Funeral Home. (Por normas sanitarias se ruega traer mascarilla/tapabocas, ya que aún se requiere en la iglesia).
