Carol Neely Obituary

Carol June Neely, 87, passed from this earthly life into heaven on January 24, 2023, with family by her side in Terre Haute, Indiana. Carol was born the 4th of five children in Gary, Indiana, to Edward and Caroline Schauberger. During her high school years, she was a member of Central Baptist Church in Gary. She learned to play the piano and played the clarinet in the high school band. She met her husband Jim Neely at church who became a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout his adult years, thereby making Carol a pastor’s wife. She was faithful in the churches where he pastored, singing in the choir, often teaching Sunday School to first-graders, and eventually establishing a ministry at Washington Heights Baptist Church (Dayton, Ohio) for the mentally and physically handicapped children and adults called Shepherd’s Class, a ministry that was still thriving at the time of her death.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James Ray Neely; her daughter Sandra Kaye Lewis; and her son James David Neely. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Drlich of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Ethel McMahan of Caldwell, Idaho; her surviving children and their spouses, David and Patricia Zemmer of Terre Haute, John and Janie Street of Santa Clarita, California, and Kenn and Julie Neely, of Evanston, Illinois; 14 grandchildren, Jonathan Zemmer and wife Amanda, Krista (Street) Breedveld and husband Sean, Michael Lewis and wife Amanda, Benjamin Zemmer and wife Michelle, Melissa (Street) Arnds and husband Jess, Rebekah (Zemmer) Garrison and husband Daniel, Daniel Lewis, Jay Street and wife Julianne, James Street, Sarah (Neely) Casper and husband Evan, Andrew Lewis and wife Meredith, Elizabeth (Lewis) Miller and husband Brandon, Calder Neely, Spencer Neely; and 24 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 5, at DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E Springhill Dr, Terre Haute, Indiana. Viewing will take place one hour before the service at 2:00 pm. A private burial will take place the following week  in Petersburg, Virginia, where the body of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend Carol will be laid to rest, awaiting the resurrection of the body when Jesus Christ returns. Because it will not be possible to transport flowers from the funeral to the gravesite, the family asks that you consider donations to Joni & Friends, a gospel ministry to the handicapped. You may donate at this website: https://.joniandfriends.org/donate
