Obituary

William C. Latta, "Papa Buff" or "Big Guy", passed away while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 after a courageous battle of 13 years with cancer. He was born in Wolcott, IN on December 21, 1940 to Richard and Irene Swaim Latta. He graduated from Lafayette Jeff H. S. before attending ISU, where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. William was a school teacher, having taught Technology at Gibault School and Vigo County School Corporation. He was the first lay person hired at Gibault. He served over 27 years and later was Principal as well as being in charge of the school's athletic programs. After leaving Gibault, he worked several jobs before returning to teaching at Chauncey Rose M.S. His objective was to be a positive role model, build character and mentor his students. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church, where he also served as the President of the Parish Board of Education in the mid 1970s. His other interests include the Banks of the Wabash Barber Shop Chorus, which he considered his second family and served as Director for 5 years. He was President & CEO of "Latta Olympics" and always the "Life of The Party". He also served on the "chain gang" for the Terre Haute South High School football games from 1995 -2014, with his sons by his side. Bill was extremely generous, and would give anyone the "shirt off his back" as displayed by his role as a father figure to his wife's younger brothers and sisters after the passing of their father. He is survived by his beloved wife Doris Ann Noe Latta, and their four children: Bill Latta & wife Bonnie Dean Latta, Paula Latta Gottardi & husband Gary, Scott Latta & wife Deede Enright Latta, Amy Latta Herndon & husband Steve, and a special family member, Chad Chrisman. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: MacKenzie Latta & Zane Latta, Lauren Cole & husband Brady, Kelsey Gottardi, Madison Gottardi, Jacob Harrod & Christopher Latta, Zachary Jenkins, Connor Herndon, and Brett Mikel Latta Herndon. Other survivors include 4 great grandchildren: Isabella, Hadleigh, Lillian, and R.G., as well as a brother, Harold Raynor, and his sisters, Connie Saylor and Sharon "Jackie" Skelton. In addition, he is survived by his in-laws Katie & Jim Donnellan, Bud & Mary Noe, Corlinda Noe & Michael Burger, Steve Noe & Karen Collins, Tom & Rhonda Noe, John & Janet Noe, and Ronnie & Jim Hill, his life-long friend, Jerry Cole, and special friends Judy Barrows, Cathy VanHorn, Mike & Michelle Glotzbach and many other friends & colleagues. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Noe, whom he dearly loved. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association. A Mass will be held at St Margaret Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, August27, 2016 at 10:00 AM, with Father Rick Ginther and Father Dan Bedel officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, August 26, 2016 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at DeBaun Springhill Chapel.
