Wayne Roberts, 87, of Terre Haute passed away at Springhill Village on December14, 2013. He was born in Vigo County on July 27, 1926 to Walter P. Roberts and Emma Altvater Roberts. He was retired from the maintenance department from Commercial Solvents (10years) and Newport Ammunication Depot, (29 years) and had earlier in his life sold carpet for Root's Department Store. He was an Army veteran of WW2 where he served with the 383rd Infantry, 96th Division, and was a recipient of three Purple Hearts and awarded two bronze stars in the Phillipine Liberaton, member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local # 157, and a longtime member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, South Campus. He had been active in the Riley Citizens Patrol and was a special deputy of the Vigo County Sheriff's Department having been appointed by former sheriff Andy Atelski. His wife, Mazie Mail Roberts, preceded him in death on December 22, 2011. He is survived by his three sons and their wives: Pastor Wayne Michael 'Mike' and Angela Roberts, Wendell Jackson 'Jack' and Tammy Roberts, and Warren Lee and April Roberts; his grandchildren April Carpenter, Westin Roberts, Autumn McCormick, Whit Roberts, Kayla Martin, Emma Roberts, and Addeline Roberts; and his great-grandchildren Alexis Roberts, Kyle Roberts, Parker Roberts. Alex McCormick, Jensen McCormick, Ashtyn Carpenter, and Avery Carpenter. He is also survived by a sister Margie Phillips and a sister-in-law Joan Roberts. Wayne was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother Walter Roberts. Funeral services will be in DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastors Aaron Wheaton and Mike Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post # 972. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. The family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to the nursing and care giving staff at Springhill Village and Clinton Gardens.
