Susan J. Proctor passed away from cancer at Springhill Village Nursing Home on Tuesday, May 19. She was born to Marvin and Mildred Bland on the 20th of February, 1943, in Terre Haute's St. Anthony Hospital. She went on to graduate from Wiley High School and Indiana State University, then pursued a career in teaching. She taught for 35 years in positions in Clay City, Vigo County, Title One Reading, and Ivy Tech. She instilled in her students her love for reading and often dressed in character as Amelia Bedelia, visiting many classrooms to read these beloved childrens' stories. Upon her retirement she was active in the American Legion Womens' Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Proctor, on March 27. She is survived by her brother, Stephen Bland, three sons: Tom, Jimmy, and Joe, two daughters in-law, Brenda and Becky, three grandchildren, Emily, Ashley, Jonathan, a sister-in-law Norma Bonnett, and several nieces and nephews. Per Susan's wishes, cremation has been chosen and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Please make any donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory. The family would like to thank everyone for all of the love and support during these difficult times. "Our mother was like the old oak tree … strong with roots that run far and deep! How far we may never know!" She will be dearly missed.
