Obituary

Stephen "Steve" D. Highsmith, Sr., 77, Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2020.  He was born September 28, 1942, in Flat Rock, Illinois, to Ruth McElroy Highsmith Lloyd and George D. Highsmith, both now deceased.  Steve spent his early years in Terre Haute, Indiana.  He graduated from Garfield High School and attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute.  He took classes with International Correspondence Accounting School.  In January 1970, Steve was transferred to Indianapolis by General Tire Company.  After holding several accounting positions in Indianapolis, Mr. Highsmith joined Memorial Clinic as the Accounting Supervisor.  After several promotions, he become Executive Director, and also served as Building Manager of The Winona Hospital Professional Building and Parking Garage.  Steve attended Butler University, graduated from the Indianapolis Floral Design School, and the F.C. Tucker School of Real Estate.  In June 1978, he purchased Speedway Florist, and in 1980 purchased Marer Flower Shop and Cronin Florist.  In 1982, a fourth flower shop opened – Highsmith Floral.  In 1992, Mr. Highsmith and his business partner sold the four floral shops.  Steve spent at short time at Carpenter Realtors and in March 1993 purchased Classic Video Store.  Later, in 1998, Steve purchased Mister Roberts Restaurant in Avon, Indiana.  In 2000 he purchased Heritage Florist in Carmel, Indiana.  After selling his business interests, Steve worked several years at Osco Drugs and Bed Bath & Beyond.  Mr. Highsmith retired March 1, 2009 at 66 years old.  Steve previously belonged to Administrative Management Society, National Medical Management Association, Building Owners Association (BOMA), National Association of Accountants, Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors, Allied Florists of Vigo County, State Florist Association of Indiana, Economics Club of Indiana, and served as Board Member and President of Eagles Knoll Condo Association.  Also, Mr. Highsmith was a past member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church in Terre Haute and Roberts Park United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.  Survivors: many, many friends; son, Steve, Jr., daughter-in-law, Carol, two granddaughters, Allison and Abby, all of Brownsburg.  In addition, a half-sister, Debra Church of Terre Haute; several aunts, nephews, and cousins, along with long time business partner and friend, Ray Heilman of Indianapolis.  Burial will be at Durham Cemetery in Terre Haute, next to his mother Ruth, and step-father of forty years, Dick Lloyd, on Saturday March 28, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
