Obituary

Ruby Claire Piety, 96, of Terre Haute, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. She taught school for 25 years and raised four daughters with her husband, Robert C. Piety. She graduated from Asbury College where she met Bob. She earned her masters degree in education at ISU with a reading specialist certification. Ruby taught English in three Vigo County High Schools: Wiley, Gerstmeyer and North, where she also sponsored Y-Teens, Bible Club and Girl Talk Club. Raised in a Salvation Army family, Ruby lived her life in service to others. Ruby was always active in whatever church she attended. She ministered first as a pastor's wife, then taught classes and organized church events. She was a long-time member of both First Prairie Creek Baptist Church and the United Methodist Temple. Ruby had a heart for those in need, and after retiring directed a YWCA & Terre Haute Housing Authority club to support young mothers. Via "Mom's Time Out," Ruby mentored many single mothers. She also volunteered at the 14th & Chestnut Community Center, working with children. Not surprisingly, she was beloved by the many people whose lives she touched.

Ruby is survived by her daughters Robin Piety Plank (Rodney), Heather Piety May, Carol Piety, and Shari Piety May. She has 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, and her beloved grandson, Brendon S. May. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple. It will be followed by a "Celebration of Life" at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. A fellowship gathering will convene afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family believes Ruby would be blessed to have donations made to the 14th & Chestnut Community Center, 1403 Chestnut St., Terre Haute, IN 47807 or follow this link,
