Robert E. "Bob" Hughes, 82, of Terre Haute passed away Thursday May 4, 2023 in his residence. He was retired after 52 ½ years in the furnace service, working for both J.G. Services and Paitson Bros.. Bob was born June 28, 1940 in Terre Haute to Ralph and Nellie (Akers) Hughes. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Hughes and Lori Montgomery; son, Gary Hughes (Reva); sisters, Sally Walters, Linda Davis (Charlie), and Dixie Able (Terry); brother, Donnie Hughes (Carol); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Nichols, Carolyn and Barrett Piety, and Mike and Cindy Peters; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Strain) Hughes, who died in 2016; son-in-law, Jim Montgomery; sisters, Francis Maurer, Cleo Scott, Peggy Ewing, and Sue Walters and brother, Jerry Hughes. Bob was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post #346, Teamsters Local #135, and Sheet Metal Workers Local #20. He loved watching the Chicago Cubs, watching his grandson play baseball, and traveling with his wife and family. Bob never met a stranger. Visitation will be Monday May 8, 2023 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services at 12:00 pm in the funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Lee officiating.
