Robert A. Brown, 89 of Prairie Creek, passed away at 4:08 AM on Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born in Prairie Creek, IN on October 19, 1923 to John Victor Brown and Lola Athey Brown. Robert was a retired Correctional Officer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Terre Haute. He is survived by two cousins, Joseph Kelly and wife Pat of Colorado Springs, CO, and Betty Neese of Evansville, IN. Also surviving is a God-son, Joseph Pillitary of Pensacola, FL and his siblings Roseann Kearley and Charles Pillitary, special friend, Rosa Pillitary, and special friend Marjorie Kirkman of Sullivan, IN. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his care givers; Chloe Weyrauch, Rick Monroe, Kimberly Payton, Mary Monroe, and Deborah McCormick. He was preceded in death by his parents. Robert was an Army Veteran & served in the Medical Corps in WW II. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1949 with a B.S. degree in Biological Science and Social Studies and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at ISU. His memberships include: Member, Merom Conference Center Governing Board and President of the Historical Council for the past 25 years, Past President and current Board member of the Sullivan County Historical Society, the Crawford County Historical Society in Robinson, IL, the Vincennes Historical and Antiquarian Society in Vincennes, IN, the Civil War Roundtable of West Central Indiana, DePauw University, Greencastle, IN, the Captain Arthur M. Rutledge Camp 1413 Sons of Confederate Veterans, Bluffton, IN, the Francis Asbury Shoup Society of Military Order of the Stars and Bars, Bluffton, IN. In addition, Robert was Adjutant of Archer's Brigade, Forrest Command, Civil War Re-enactment group, Terre Haute, IN, member of Othniel Looker Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Robinson, IL, member of the General Society of the War of 1812, member and Past Commander Prairie Creek American Legion Post # 404, Wren Smith Post # 6574 Veterans of Foreign Wars in West Terre Haute, IN. He was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sullivan and attended St. Margaret-Mary Catholic in Terre Haute. Funeral Mass will be held in DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Father Paul Petko officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Creek West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with a rosary service at 7:00 PM. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Merom Conference Center or either the Terre Haute or Sullivan Humane Shelters, in his memory, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
