Rita J. Turner, 93, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday February 10, 2024 in her residence. She was a retired teacher for the Vigo County School Corporation having worked at several schools but spending 22 years at Dixie Bee Elementary. She was born June 4, 1930 in Terre Haute to Raymond and Letha (Wright) Halberstadt. Rita is survived by her daughters, Lynn Bolinger (Brent) and Paula Grover (Cary Willis); sons, Brian Turner (Jenny Cannaday) and Brent Turner (Britt); grandchildren, Megan Turner, Leah Schmidt (Jacob), Lydia Grover-Willis, Ethan Turner (Mariah), Becca Turner (Casey Simons), Cameron Bolinger (Erin); step-grandson, Dustin Crook, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and her caregiver, Lacretia Shelton that the family would like to extend their thanks to for the wonderful care she provided their mother. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Richard Grover; her second husband, Harold G. Turner, and her brother, Donald Halberstadt. Rita graduated from Indiana State Teachers College with a degree in Education. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Greater Terre Haute Bowling Association, and Farmersburg United Methodist Church. She loved to bowl, which she did until she was 90 years young, read, travel, paint, and shop. She received the Senior Bowler of the Year award in 2013-2014. And she loved her cats, Lilly and JoJo. Visitation will be Saturday February 17, 2024 from 12:00 until 2:30 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services starting at 2:30 pm in the funeral home with Pastor Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Farmersburg WestLawn Cemetery. If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation.
