Obituary Paul Earnest Selge Paul Earnest Selge, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 20, 2016 at Gathering Together Hospice in Plainfield, IN. He was a 1st Class inductee into the Indiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. The third of four siblings, he was born on Aug. 4, 1921 in South Bend, IN to Paul Robert Selge and Minnie Marie Baumgart Selge He attended Indiana State Teachers College on a county scholarship and earned a BS in Education degree in June 1943. At ISTC he competed in basketball, swimming, and won a Golden Gloves award in boxing. He was a three-time member of the Associated Press & United Press 1st Team, All State Small College Football Team. In Sep. 1943 Paul reported for active duty at the U.S. Navy Midshipman School at Chicago, IL. He was commissioned as an Ensign and assigned aboard the USS Lamar, APA 47, as a landing craft commander. He deployed to the South Pacific and participated in five combat assault landings. In July 1946 he was released from Active Duty and joined the Navy Reserve in Terre Haute. In April 1951 he was recalled to Active Duty for service during the Korean War. After the war, he continued to serve and later commanded the Navy Reserve Training Center at Terre Haute. He retired at the rank of Commander in 1970. In Sep 1946, he returned to Indiana State Teachers College and was employed for the next 37 years as an Instructor of Physical Education. During this tenure he coached alternately football, track and swimming. He served as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for over 25 years and was on the faculty of the National Aquatic School at Purdue University. During WWII he met, LT(JG) Myrtle Marie Thibodeaux, a Navy Nurse, and they were married in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 1946. Paul and Myrtle were married for 66 years until her death in 2012. Together they raised six children. The family was a long time member of St. Margaret Mary Church and later of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Paul and Barbara Selge of Burnsville, MN; Alan Selge of Plymouth, IN; Mark Selge of Indianapolis, IN; Robert Selge of Avon, IN; and daughter Debra Selge of Wolfe City, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle; brothers Charlie and Marvin Selge; sister Gertrude Hoffman; daughter Diane Spetter; and grandson Staff Sergeant Todd Selge. Visitation will be on Friday April 22, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, Terre Haute. Mass of Christian burial has been scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South Ninth St., with Rev. Father Mathews officiating. There will be a 30-minute visitation before the services. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
