Obituary

Paul Allen Reed, a kind and humble man of great servant leadership, was called home. The loss to many is deep. On Friday, September 13, 2024, he made his last clock out at 4:30 p.m. He was surrounded by his loving family, his extended work family from Indiana State University, and close friends.

Lester and Mary (Furry) Reed welcomed Paul into the world on October 31, 1950, in Linton, IN. His brother Dr. Donald Reed was waiting at home for his baby brother but has since been called home ahead of him. A few years later, his little sister Beth Ann Ostby now of Columbus, IN was added to this happy family.

His vocational calling was that of the ministry in the early years and he attended North Central Bible College to pursue his passion working with people. But his ministry would be used in other ways as he began his work of 42 years at Indiana State University where he began by cleaning carpets at night. His value was soon realized, and he moved forward becoming a manager and director of special services at the University. Where he dedicated his work, to not only keeping the environment clean and safe but assisting in creating an award winning recycle program that set the standard for colleges across the nation. No bottle of any kind was left behind under his watch. Countless numbers of students were given lessons by him on how to do their part to save the earth. He also ensured that moves of offices were handled with care. It was often said in meetings and corners that if you needed something done, you called Paul Reed. And he did. Even when everyone had gone home for the day, and a call came, he would roll up his sleeves and go across campus to unclog a toilet and clean up. He never asked anyone to do a job that he himself would not do. For his dedication and committed service he was awarded in 2012 The University Medallion, the highest honor that is conferred on a staff member by the university.

Now along this journey, he met and married the love of his life, Martha Thorne Reed who remains until they meet again. He spent almost 38 years with her hand in hand. Growing things and watching the world in daily wonderment.  Anyone who knows them, knew theirs was a beautiful love story. Not an easy one due to many outside forces but the bond of love could not be broken. Those years were still not enough time. One of the biggest rolls he played was being Santa Claus the past two years at the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Light your way Parade. It was often said that he and Mrs. Claus were the most beautiful couple as they loved to share the joy and happiness to so many young and old.

Paul loved to plant seeds and nurture them to maturity, but he took special care to join TREES, INC to ensure that trees were planted ever season to help future generations have shade and beauty along so many Terre Haute streets. He was awarded for his efforts for the first year and then presented the Joy Sacopulos Legacy Award.

Paul also has a family legacy that now lives on with four daughters and blended family, Rachelle Stinnett of Brazil, IN, Melissa (Theo) Prevot, Indianapolis, IN, Crystalynn (Michael Godek) Indianapolis, IN, Monica (Benjamin) Chigo, Terre Haute, IN, Krystle (James) Moore, Terre Haute, IN. Grandchildren, Jonathan Stinnett, Eileen (Timothy) Ghogle, Ashley, Antwan, and Aundrey Prevot, Drake McCune, Michael Godek, Justyn, and Isabella Juarez. Haylee and Alyssa Dicus and Carson Moore. Great Grandchildren, Ava Stinett, Asher Ghogle, Aurora, Ayen and Emeriella Prevot.  Brother-in-law, John (JT)Thorne, Johanna Randall and Nephew, Brian Grayson Thorne. Along with several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. With countless adopted students throughout the years.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Parke, Vermillion County Humane Shelter, TREES, INC., Indiana State University or the Dana Volunteer Fireman Ladies Auxiliary.
