Nellie Mae
(Harding) Liston
February 6, 1931 – February 25, 2026
Nellie Mae Harding Liston, 95, of Farmersburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at her home. She was born at home in Sullivan County on February 6, 1931, to Robert Clifford Harding and Eura May Gaskins Harding. Nellie was a 1949 graduate of Farmersburg High School. She was the hardest working woman that most people knew. At the age of 12 she was cleaning houses. Nellie worked at City Market, Davis Gardens, moved to Indianapolis to work at RCA, and then returned back home working at Commercial Solvents. She then went on to work at Pfizer. Nellie even worked summers at the Farmersburg Dairy Queen and sold Avon cosmetics for 30 years. In 1970 she began working at North East School Corporation as a kindergarten aid retiring after 31 years. To this day, students still remember her kindness and were inspired by Nellie. Still eager to work, she began employment at Miller's Merry Manor and retired again in 2016 at the age of 85. She was proud that she worked to put all three of her daughters through college.
Nellie and her husband were long time card players and she was the last surviving member of their group. She also played cards at the Farmersburg Community Building for many years. There she was known to always provide snacks and would keep things in order for the games.
The family took a vacation every summer and Nellie traveled to nearly every state. She was very spry and active, which kept her in great shape for many years. Nellie drove until she was 91 years old. She would treat herself to Ryan's every day of the week and once it closed, she then went to Golden Coral for lunch every day of the week. The staff remember her fondly and they were always happy to have her there. Her presence and smile will be missed by so many.
Nellie is survived by her daughters Betty Jean Alumbaugh, Nancy Gayle Liston, and Barbara Sue Alsman (Brent); bonus daughter Karen Sampson, grandchildren Jeremy Alumbaugh (Trista), Ashley Alumbaugh (Josh), Cole Johnson, and Kenzie Mae Jenkins (Ryan); great grandchildren Emma Alumbaugh, Gage Alumbaugh, Kaden Alumbaugh, Keegan Alumbaugh, and Kennedy Alumbaugh, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of 36 years Gale K. Liston who passed April 8, 1990, brothers Walter Harding (Esther), Ralph Harding (June), Robert Harding (Ruth), George Harding (Carolyn), Emil Harding (Bonnie) and Junior Harding (Faye) and son in law Everett "Butch" Alumbaugh.
