Michael Robert Dwyer, 82, a lifelong resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away in the early morning hours of September 16, 2026.

Except for the years he spent serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, Mike called Terre Haute home throughout his life. He devoted much of his life to serving his community, spending 32 years with the Terre Haute Fire Department as a firefighter and emergency dispatcher. He also worked for Clark Floral Co. for many years. Following his retirement from the Fire Department, Mike continued to give back to his community through volunteer work at St. Ann’s Clinic and the Salvation Army.

Mike had a genuine interest in people and always seemed to find a way to connect with those around him, whether it was an old friend, a neighbor, or someone he had just met. He especially enjoyed gathering with his firefighter buddies for their monthly lunches and annual retirement dinner, where he could catch up, share a few laughs, and enjoy their friendship. With a heart of gold, a quiet sense of humor, and a natural curiosity about people and the world around him, Mike had a way of making those he met feel welcome and valued.

At the center of Mike’s life was his family. He and his beloved wife, Mary, shared a long life together, building a home and raising a family in Terre Haute. Through the ordinary days, the celebrations, the challenges, and the many years they shared, Mary was his partner and the love of his life. Her passing left a space that could never truly be filled.

Mike took tremendous pride in his children and grandchildren. He loved knowing what was happening in their lives, hearing about their accomplishments, and watching the family he and Mary began grow through the generations. He may not always have been the loudest person in the room, but there was never any question about how proud he was of his family or how deeply he loved them. Becoming a great-grandfather added one more generation for him to cherish.

Among the many relationships that meant so much to Mike was the special bond he shared with his grandson, Monte Walker. For 20 years, Mike was a father figure to Monte, offering his love, guidance, support, and steady presence through the years. Their relationship was a testament to the kind of person Mike was, someone who showed his love not only through words, but through simply being there. The impact he had on Monte’s life will continue to be felt for generations to come.

His Catholic faith was another constant throughout his life. Mike had deep connections over the years to St. Ann’s and St. Margaret Mary Catholic Churches. Faith and family were at the core of what he believed, shaping the way he lived his life, cared for others, and understood his place in the world.

Mike was an avid reader, an enthusiastic online shopper, and a loyal Indianapolis Colts fan. He also had a giant register of stories and tall tales. His children will never forget his recounting of his cold-weather Army training in Norway and the culinary invention he shared that Norwegians continue to enjoy 60 years later. It was one of many stories collected over a long life and retold with just enough mystery and humor to become part of family history.

Mike is survived by his son, Andrew (Brooke) Dwyer; daughters, Cheryl (Jonathan) Drew and Teresa Dwyer; his grandchildren, Kathleen Drew, Evan Drew, Conner Dwyer, and Monte Walker; his great-granddaughter, Violet Perez-Drew; and by his sister Melanie Wright.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; his grandson, Collin Walker; brother Thomas Dwyer, and several extended family members.

Mike leaves behind more than the facts of a life well lived. He leaves a family of whom he was immensely proud, a lifetime of stories, a strong and enduring faith, and memories that will continue to be told around family tables for years to come. He will be remembered for his kindness, his curiosity, his quiet humor, his devotion to Mary, and, above all, the love and pride he had for his family.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Family and friends are invited to join together to celebrate Mike’s life, honor his memory, and share the many memories he leaves behind. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, at St. Margaret Mary Church in Terre Haute, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
