Obituary

Joanna Hamrick, 86, formerly from Terre Haute, passed away peacefully, July 15, 2022, at her long-term care residence in Indianapolis.

Joanna was born Sept. 12, 1935, to Joseph and Dorothy Gray in Sullivan, IN.  She grew up in Terre Haute, IN, graduating in 1953 from Garfield High School.

Following high school, as a student from Ms. Ernestine Meyers School of Dance, Joanna travelled the Midwest, performing in productions throughout several states, as a dancer.

She married the love of her life, Donald Hamrick, of Terre Haute, in 1954 and they were blessed with 63 years of marriage before his passing.  Together they raised four children and lived in various areas of the country, retiring to Ozark, Arkansas and eventually returning to Terre Haute.

During her life, along with being a home maker, Joanna worked in the retail industry, and as a security officer at Wanamaker Dept. store as well as, Harrah's Casino.

Joanna enjoyed a variety of activities during her lifetime.  She was a member of several women's groups with her church in Arkansas.  An avid gardener, she earned her Master Gardner certificate, and was a member of a local Gardeners' Association in Ozark.  She was an accomplished baker, often entering competitions and winning several prizes at local fairs.  Joanna also enjoyed sewing and crafting, which she shared with family and friends.

Joanna was especially fond of time spent with her husband.  Together, they enjoyed being a part of a square-dancing group, as well as playing cards with family and friends. Joanna enjoyed traveling with Don and in most recent years, she enjoyed accompanying him to his Naval ship reunions.

During her final years, her love of life and joy found in activities, was continued while at her long-term care facility.  There, she participated in festivities and shows; was a member of the Resident Council; and even performed in a promotional video.  Most often, she could be found playing Bingo in the afternoons.  Joanna also enjoyed attending Downey Avenue Christian Church with her daughter before her health became too frail.

Joanna was preceded in death by her parents (Joseph and Dorothy Gray); her sister (Johneen Jones); a nephew (Joseph Jones) and by her husband (Donald Hamrick).

She is survived by her four children: Thoma (William) Bastin of Indianapolis; Donald (Licia) Hamrick of Nashville, IN; John (Maureen) Hamrick of Germantown, TN and Raeanna (Todd) Wagner of Levittown, PA; five grandchildren: Jessica Willoby (Terre Haute, IN); Chelsea Bastin (NYC, NY); Kyle (Miranda) Hamrick (Murfreesboro, TN) and John and Aidan Hamrick (Germantown, TN); and 2 great-grandchildren:  Hayden Willoby and Rhett Hamrick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Downey Avenue Christian Church, 111 S. Downey Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46219, where they will be used to support the Performing Arts Ministry.  (Please note her name in the memo line.)
