Jean P. Deis, 89, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on December 28, 2016. He was born September 4, 1927 to Edward and Carolyn (Myers) Deis. After graduating from Chaminade High School in Dayton, Ohio, he moved to New York City to study voice with Enrico Rosati and Cesare Sturani. He also studied with Richard Bonelli at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he earned a diploma in vocal performance. Mr. Deis was winner of the Marian Anderson Scholarship Fund Award, and a grant recipient of the William Matthews Sullivan Foundation. As a winner of the American Opera Auditions, he made his operatic debut in Milan, Italy and went on to perform leading tenor roles in major opera houses across the United States. Mr. Deis continued to perform as he began his teaching career at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and then the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. He also served as a juror for the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Rosa Ponselle Foundation. In 1990 he retired from Indiana University as Professor Emeritus. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marianne A. Deis. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David G. Gardner, his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Deis, his daughter, Ms. Maria Deis, a grandson, five granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, two great grandsons, and the many students whose lives he enriched. Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, Ind. The family has entrusted DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive, with making arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Cancer Society Joseph S. and Jeannette M. Silber Hope Lodge, 11432 Mayfield Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44106-2364.
