James "Dennis" Murphy, 73 of Terre Haute, passed away at 3:19 AM on Thursday, February 20, 2014 in Union Hospital. He was born in Terre Haute on August 31, 1940 to William "Pat" Murphy and Margaret Hadley Murphy. Dennis graduated from Wiley High School in 1959 and attended Terre Haute Business College. After serving in the Army, he worked in the trucking industry. As a youth he spent several summers at the Art Gaines Baseball Camp in Hannibal, MO. In 1960, he played one season with a Detroit Tigers Farm Club in North Carolina. He loved the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a sister, Frances Keltz Toon, and a brother-in-law, Max Flinn. Dennis is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Alice Petty Murphy, two sons, Jim Murphy & wife Leslie of Honolulu, HI, and Danny Murphy of Terre Haute. Also surviving are his grandchildren Curtis and Madison—both of Terre Haute, and 3 sisters-in-law; Sue Flinn of West Terre Haute, Nancy Kimmel & husband John of Pt Richey, FL, and Dorothy Morris and husband Bud of Zion, IL. Other survivors include his former daughter-in-law Jenny and several nieces and nephews. Dennis will be remembered for his keen sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or services, as cremation is planned with graveside services at a later date with interment in Durham Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory.
