James "Jim" Harkness, Sr., born January 12, 1935, to Forrest and Helen Harkness, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026. He graduated from Terre Haute State High School in 1953, where he was well known throughout the valley for his excellence on the basketball court. After graduating, he honorably served his county as a member of the United States Army. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley Ferris Harkness, sister Kathy Norris, son James Harkness, Jr. (Tracy), daughter Avalee Akers (Jim), and grandsons Chandler Stanton, Chase Stanton (Stephanie), James "Trey" Harkness III, Tyler Harkness and Tristan Harkness. James was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Harkness, and daughter Katrina Harkness.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Service will begin at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Cremation will follow service. Online condolences may be made to www.debaunfuneralhomes.com.
