James William Bays Sr., 100, of Terre Haute passed away October 17, 2017 at 11:46 a.m. in his home surrounded by family.  He was born April 9, 1917 to James Thomas and Mertie Bays.  He was a railroad conductor for Louisville and Nashville Railroad.  At an early age he worked as a firefighter with the Civilian Conservation Corps in California.  James served as Secretary of the United Transportation Union, Fraternal Order of Eagles Golden Eagle member, and is a member of the Clay City Assembly of God Church.  He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, camping, watching western movies starring John Wayne, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was known for his many stories.

James was preceded in death by his parents James Thomas and Mertie Bays, brothers Chester Bays and Andy Fisher, sisters Dorothy Huey and Maudie Ray and one granddaughter Amanda Harris.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Roberta Bays, sons James Bays, Jr.  (Marge), Daniel Bays (Janet), David Bradbury (Delana), Gary Bays (Jennifer Moore) and Wayne Bays (Cindy Cox); daughters Dianna McGanahan (Sam), Darla Bays, Cheryl Bays Arnett (Phillip  Reason) and Carolyn Rader (James), twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at DeBaun Funeral Home 85 E. Springhill Drive in Terre Haute on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with services to follow with Pastor Brad Porter officiating.
