Obituary

Hildegard Werra McHenry, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 22, 2015 at her home in Terre Haute after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Bremen, Germany on April 26, 1921 to Henriette Friederike Meta Börgershausen. Hilde grew up in the bustling port city of Bremen during the chaotic Weimar Republic years of the 1920s and the Nazi dictatorship of the 1930s. Her early adult life was marked by the frequent bombing of her beloved city during World War II. She learned secretarial skills and English at a commercial school and worked in various secretarial positions in both Germany and Indiana through much of her long life. It was while working at the U.S. Consulate in Bremen in the late 1940s that she met the love of her life, Glenn E. McHenry. They were married on March 11, 1953 and, following a honeymoon in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps, moved to his hometown of Brazil in 1953, settling in Terre Haute in 1954. Hilde was a founding member of the German Oberlandler Club and could always be counted on, until the last few years, to volunteer her time at its annual events such as the Strassenfest and the Oktoberfest. She loved to travel, visiting most of the states as well as many countries in Europe and the Caribbean. She maintained a very close relationship for decades with her mother and sister in Germany and visited them every few years. She loved music, having played in the Stolzenfels Mandolin Orchestra and sung in the Domchor (Cathedral Choir) in Bremen as well as in the Triads and other choirs in Indiana. She loved swimming, reading, and crossword puzzles. Most of all, she loved her family and her adopted country, of which she became a proud citizen in 1958. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, on January 18, 2015; her parents; her sister, Margot Ilse Kettenburg; and her brother, Walter Börgershausen. She is survived by a son, Walter (and Paula), of Terre Haute; a granddaughter, Rachel Brynsvold (and Eric) of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Daniel, of Battle Creek, Michigan; and a niece, Waltraud Meyer (and Frank) of Bad Nienburg, Germany. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 26 at 12:00 at DeBaun Funeral Home, located at 25th and Wabash in Terre Haute. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 until the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hilde's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation at http://www.alzfdn.org.
