Henry Tamar, 84, of West Terre Haute passed away on September 9, 2014. He was born in Vienna, Austria. He immigrated to the United States in 1939. Henry married Margaret Tamar in 1955 and recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. He earned a PH.D in Sensory Physiology from Florida State University. Henry was the head of the Division of Science and Mathematics at Pembroke State College in Pembroke, NC 1958-1962. He relocated to Terre Haute, IN to accept a teaching position at Indiana State University, Professor of Physiology and Anatomy with many graduating students in medicine and nursing. He taught at the university for 36 years. Over years of diligent research, he made seven discoveries in microbiology, including the one-cell organism Halteria Bifacarta Tamar in 1968. He also wrote the book, Principles of Sensory Physiology in 1972. Henry was a long-time member of Central Presbyterian Church in Terre Haute and past President of the Wabash Valley Audubon Society. He enjoyed his family, his research for new species of protozoa, his years of teaching college students and especially nature and being in the outdoors. He was an avid gardener and bird watcher, who hiked in the woods regularly. He was a kind and thoughtful person who will be missed by all of his family and friends. Proceeded in death by father (Julius) and mother (Pauline);Surviving sister, Erica in New York City, NYThree children: Earl (Erin), Allen (Suzanne) and Mark (Candia)Five grandchildren: Mitchell, Hillary, Claire, Matthew and Christian. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 14th at 1:00PM at Central Presbyterian Church in Terre Haute. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in his memory to the Wabash Valley Audubon Society at PO Box 2338, Terre Haute, IN 47802.
