Henry Ward Conrad, 91, of Terre Haute, passed away at 7:25 PM on Monday, June 17, 2013 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born in Terre Haute on November 13, 1921 to Henry W. Conrad, Sr. and Nellie Shnee Conrad. Henry retired from the Air Force, TWA, and International Flying. He attended Indiana State University for two years until joining the Army Air Corps, going to Cadet School & then going into WW II as a Lieutenant. While in WW II, he fought in the China, Burma, and India Theatre with Lieutenant General Claire Chennault. He retired from the Army Air Corps (Air Force) as a Colonel. In addition to Cadet School (which was equivalent to a 4 year degree at West Point), he also studied at Cambridge University, near London. In a third flying career, he flew dignitaries such as Cary Grant, Ray Charles, Charlie Rich, Elvis Presley, Raquel Welch, the Hilton Family, Dave Mason, and Neil Diamond on World Tours. Henry was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, spoke fluent Spanish which he learned in Bogota, Columbia while serving as a Flight Attaché for the Ambassador of Bogota in the 1950s. In 2008, he ran as a candidate for the Vigo County School Board and was always interested in helping the children. Henry was an Eagle Scout at Camp Kreitenstein and was a member of the Literary Society of Terre Haute. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary Frances Farmer Conrad. Also surviving is a son, Alfred W. Conrad of Santa Monica, CA, and a step-daughter, Susan Kathryn Dawson of Terre Haute, as well as a sister, Mary McCrae of Durham, NH. In addition, he has two grandchildren, Christian Conrad of Laguna Beach, CA and Kimberly Conrad of Culver City, CA & was expecting twin great-grandsons in December. Other survivors include three nieces; Downing Sanchez and husband Martine, Laura McCrae and Scarlett McCrae, and great nephews Conrad Sanchez and Alexander Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his father Conrad, Sr., who was a Banker for Terre Haute First National Bank and his mother Nellie, his step-mother, Avice Conrad McKibben McCrae. Also preceding him in death was his 1st wife Marjorie Bartholome Conrad, who was mother to their son Alfred, his twin brother Alfred H. Conrad, a paratrooper who gave his life during the liberation of Holland at the Battle of Market Garden. Funeral services will be held in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Mary Selinski officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions are made to any Dementia/Alzheimer's Organization in his memory.
