Obituary

Helen J. Westerman "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints" ~~Psalm 116:15 August 10, 2016, Helen J. Westerman made her ascent into the kingdom of heaven. Born on June 6, 1920 to Leticia and Lawrence Johnson of Terre Haute, she lived a life of faith, charity, and great love for her family and friends. On February 19th, 1943 she wed William Westerman who preceded her in death. She and William bore a son, William H. Westerman II (Bill) who survives. As a teenager, Helen worked for her parent's creamery, once located on Poplar Street in what is now the Kleptz Aluminum building. Although she was proud of her upbringing and had many stories of growing up around the creamery, and taking goats and chickens in exchange for milk during the Great Depression, she claimed to not like ice cream, but did love a Wendy's Frosty from time to time. Helen graduated from Indiana State Teacher's College with a Master's Degree in Education. She retired as a highly decorated and respected elementary teacher in Vigo County, having taught at Sugar Grove, Davis Park, and Dixie Bee Elementary Schools. Helen remains a memory to those she leaves behind. Surviving her is Raymond (Brother) and Martha Johnson of Arizona, William H. Westerman (son), Melissa (Granddaughter) and John Boyd, Scott Westerman (Grandson) and Wendy Maris-Akers, also surviving are her Great Grandchildren, Caitlyn Cantrell, Broderic "Brode" Boyd, Carter Boyd, Harlie Westerman, Derek Westerman, and Margot Akers. She also leaves many extended family members. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 6:00 PM at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with a time of sharing by friends and family. Visitation is on Friday from 3:00 - 6:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation, in her memory. Helen will be forever missed but never forgotten.
