Harold G. Cox, Jr., Ph.D., 88, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday October 14, 2023 in Cobblestone Crossing Healthcare. He was a Sociology Professor at Indiana State university from 1965-2000 and Sociology Department Chairman for 25 years. Prior to coming to ISU he taught for four years in Danville, Illinois. He was born  October 7, 1935 in Danville, Illinois to Harold and Mary Helen (Young) Cox. Harold is survived by his loving wife, Peggy (Stark) Cox; daughter, Marilyn Splitgerber (Douglas); sons, Mark Cox and Steve Cox (Sue); brother, Gary Cox (Donna); grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher, Eric, Matthew, Hanna, Megan, Sara, and Christina and 16 great grandchildren. Harold was a Sagamore of the Wabash recipient. He earned the Faculty Distinguished Service Award in 1999, Alex Boros Award/ Applied Sociologist in 2001, Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Award in 1997, and Martin Milner Senior Volunteer of the Year in 2005. He authored the textbook, Later Life-The Realities of Aging, Editor of Aging-Annual Editions, and author of many published articles on Sociology and Gerontology. Harold was President and member of Area 7 Agency of Aging. Was a member of United Methodist Temple and the University Club of ISU. He conducted workshops for nursing home Administrators, first thru ISU then independently from 2000-2013. Harold enjoyed riding horses in Corydon, Indiana and Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. He raised German Shorthaired Pointers for many years and enjoyed pheasant hunting in Kansas, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Visitation will be Thursday October 19, 2023 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services on Friday October 20, 2023 at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Pastor Chris Gadlage officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
