Gregory Smith Carter of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away at 5:05 am on December 21st, 2025. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 25, 1947 to Raymond Carter and Mary Smith Carter. Greg was a graduate of Rivet High School in Vincennes, Indiana. He then completed a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences with a major in government at Indiana University. Also, he was president of the Acacia Fraternity. He attended Indiana University School of Law and graduated in 1972. Upon graduation he served as the Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Monroe County, Indiana and subsequently was named Prosecuting Attorney. He moved to Terre Haute, Indiana in 1979 and joined a law firm specializing in defense of civil claims. He joined the Sacopulos Law Firm in 1991 and continued to defend civil cases with a concentration in medical malpractice. In 1996 he was asked to lead an investigation into a medical malpractice case in Vermillion County, Indiana. He then became a full time Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Vermillion County until he then rejoined the Sacopulos Firm in the capacity of counsel and specialized in medical malpractice, healthcare issues, and administrative law.
Greg was active in the community and has served in a number of committees and ministries at the St Joseph University Parish including service as President of the Parish Council, teaching Bible classes, serving on the Acts committee and filling food baskets for the Catholic Charities. Greg has been a board member of the Red Cross and Lifeline.
Greg also served as president of the Vigo Co. Bar Association, He was a member of the Vigo County Bar Association and Indiana Trial Lawyers Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Mark and a sister-in-law Gini Huston.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Marcia, two sisters-in-law Lorena Culver, Evalina Snarski and two brothers-in-law Clarence Anderson and Jerry Huston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on January 3, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home with services at 2:00p.m. with Pastor Kyle Andrews officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
