Obituary

Gertrude Johanna Habley, formerly of Brookfield, Illinois, passed quietly in her sleep with family members at her side on the morning of October 20, 2013. Born on March 18, 1913, in Chicago, Illinois, Gertrude was the daughter of Martin Camfferman and Clasine Godee. She married Florian Habley on February 6, 1932, with whom she celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to his death in 1987. Gert and Flory had four children: Virjean Willock – Terre Haute; Sharon Shields – Lincoln, Nebraska; Martin (Susan) – Stickney, Illinois; and Wesley (Katherine) – Coralville, Iowa. In addition, her family tree included 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren, many of whom were able to attend her 100th birthday celebration in March of this year. Gert became a working mom long before it became fashionable, serving for many years as store manager for Fannie May Candies in LaGrange, Illinois. She will be remembered for many things: for her beautiful alto voice, for her faith, and for the affection she showed for babies. But most of all she will be remembered for the firm but always loving nurture of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (Isaac, Martin, and Jacob), and husband, Florian. Private services for the scattering of her ashes will take place at a later date. DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel assisted with arrangements.
