George R. Johnson, 92, retired Vice President of Prudential Newlin-Johnson Real Estate Company, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 5:35 p.m. in Westminster Village.
He was born December 25, 1923 in Prairie Creek, Indiana to Granville "Skeet" Johnson and Ethel Mars Johnson. He married Grace Boyll on September 4, 1948 and she passed away July 31, 2009. They were married 61 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Paulette D. Friend (Tim) of Indianapolis; his son, Mark R. Johnson of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Jennifer E. Linsley( Ken), of Las Vegas, Nevada, Gregory R. Friend (Stephanie) and their two children, Austin Grace and Tanner Alise, of California and Erik W. Friend of Chicago, Illinois; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and cousins.
George graduated from Prairie Creek High School in 1941 and from Indiana State University in 1948. During World War II he was a member of the 11th Airborne Division serving in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars. He served with the Signal Corp during the Korean War. In 1948 he was employed by Paiges Music Store where he remained until 1956 when he joined Prudential Newlin-Johnson Real Estate Company, retiring after 46 years of service. George is a former member of the National Association of Real Estate Boards, the Indiana Real Estate Association and the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors. He was the president of the association in 1962 and received the Realtor Image Award in 1999. He was a member of the Oregon Baptist Church for many years where he served on the deacon board, taught Sunday school, was a member and director of the choir and he congregational song leader for 50 years. He was a member the Crusaders Gospel Quartet that presented musical programs throughout the Wabash Valley for 22 years.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Grace Boyll Johnson; two sisters, Wilma Johnson, who passed away in infancy; and Lucille Johnson Moran.
Services will be held Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 East Springhill Drive, Terre Haute, Indiana 4802. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors; Reverend Fred Harrison will be officiating.
