Geneva I.
(Shafer) Romine Miller Houston
January 13, 1922 – December 27, 2022
Geneva Houston of Terre Haute passed away at her residence in Bloomington, Indiana on December 27, 2022. Born Geneva Irene Shafer in a log cabin in McKanda, Illinois January 13, 1922, she was the oldest child of Prince Carl and Edna Shafer with five other siblings. Geneva married Carol Romine on March 9, 1941 and they enjoyed 35 years of marriage before his early passing. Together they had 6 sons, two of whom are deceased (Carl and Jerry Romine). She lived her whole life in and around southern Indiana. From Washington, to Farmersburg, to Youngstown to Terre Haute, and in the last few years in Bloomington at the Bell Trace Health and Living Center near her youngest son. While her last years were spent in Bloomington her heart was always at home in Terre Haute.
She was a loving and outgoing person who enjoyed being out and doing, whether attending the Indiana University Women's Basketball team, attending a music concert, or having lunch with her grandchildren, she was happiest when out and about. She had attended the Women's game just last week at the University. A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars she is a past President of the VFW Auxiliary at Post 972 in Terre Haute. She had a full and busy life.
She is survived by four of her sons, Robert Romine (Stephanie), Donald Romine (Amy), David Romine (Peggy), Richard Romine (Connie) and first daughter-in-law Sandy as well as her twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday January 3, 2023 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services on Wednesday January 4, 2023 at 10:30 am in the funeral home.
