July 4, 1949 – February 11, 2023
Estel Wayne Stewart, Sr., 73, of Terre Haute, IN, passed away shortly before midnight on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Harrison Crossing. Estel was born July 4, 1949, the son of Reverend John Lewis Stewart and Edna Pearl Stewart. He was married to Evangeline Ruth Stewart on August 2, 1968. They were married over 54 years and had four children who survive him: Jacquelyn Sue Stewart (chemistry teacher in Quincy, IL), Gwendora Lynn McIntyre (home healthcare R.N in Mooresville, IN) married to Jason (engineer for GE), Estel Wayne Stewart, Jr. (risk manager in Indianapolis, IN), and Michael Dwayne Stewart (carpenter in Terre Haute, IN) married to Mary Ann (UMG patient accounts representative). Sister, Esther Hedden (Carl) and brother, Mark Stewart (Charlotte) and two grandchildren: Caydence Evangeline McIntyre and Canton Paul McIntyre. Estel was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Estel attended Honey Creek High School and trained to become a radio DJ, but instead was employed for over 40 years as an endothermic atmospheric operator at Prox Company in Terre Haute. He was a commissioned minister for the Indiana Wesleyan Southern District, pastoring at Bloomfield Wesleyan Church for over a decade and at Brazil Wesleyan Church until his retirement from the ministry. In addition, he was the secretary-treasurer of his local union, Local 127.
Estel was a collector. He collected hat pins, ink pens, baseball cards, baseball statistics, books, Matchbox cars, watches, radios and baseball hats. He enjoyed walking in cemeteries and sitting in malls, people watching. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves (primarily because of Hank Aaron). He loved IU basketball with Bobby Knight, cheered for the Unsers at the Indianapolis 500. Estel loved taking long rides in the evenings with his wife and family when he always wanted them to sing. He would randomly break into song himself, hymns such as "Ship Ahoy" and "Great is Thy Faithfulness."
