Ernest (Ernie) David Smith, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, November 24, 2022. He was the devoted husband of the late Patricia (Pat) Smith for 62 years. Born on November 23, 1933, in Waterbury, Connecticut, he was the son of Thomas and Mary (Scott) Smith.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Ernie was a man of integrity and honor, guiding his family with quiet strength and unconditional love.

Ernie served his country with honor and pride in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring from the military in 1973. He continued his aviation career as a pilot and director of training with Britt Airways in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1980, he joined Hulman & Co., where he served as chief pilot for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation until his retirement in 1999.

Ernie enjoyed an active retirement. He loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours building a cabin in New Hampshire with his brothers, fishing, hiking, and traveling with family and friends. An avid and excellent golfer, bridge player, and bowler, Ernie participated in many leagues and groups in the Terre Haute area. He was also a member of the American Legion and Military Officers Association of America.

Ernie is survived by daughters Marilyn Smith (James Farley) of McCordsville, Indiana, Kathleen O'Neal (Steven) of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Linda Smith of Decatur, Georgia; his son Thomas Smith (Penny) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; grandchildren Stacy, Trisha, Michael, Alaina, David, Christopher; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Edison, of Round Rock, Texas. In addition to his parents and wife Pat, he is predeceased by his brothers George ("Buddy"), Arthur, Edward, and William, and sister Marjorie.

Our hero and friend, Dad was truly one of the good guys. He will be missed more than words can say but will be with us always in our hearts.

His family invites you to join in celebrating Ernie's life at a gathering on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Military honors will be held at 4:00 p.m. If friends so desire, contributions in Ernie's honor may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, or local charities.
