Earl Romine passed away peacefully October 19, 2017, at Southwood Rehabilitation Center ten days after his 98th birthday surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 9, 1919, in Fairbanks, Indiana to Carl and Audra Wilson Romine, and was the brother of Elva Bedwell, Laree Talcott, Lara Borders, and Emmitt Romine. He grew up in Sullivan County and met his future wife Virginia Huff at a square dance. They married on November 23, 1941, and together they raised seven daughters, twins Janet and Janice, Karen, Joyce, Sandy, and twins Leanna and Deanna. They celebrated 69 wonderful years of marriage before Virginia passed away on April 7, 2011.
Earl was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather who loved his family dearly. He enjoyed camping, mowing his yard, coon hunting, horse pulling, farming, gardening, and restoring tractors.
Earl was a hard-working man who worked for 22 1/2 years at the Indiana Gas and Chemical Company and retired from J. I. Case in Terre Haute. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was the second oldest living veteran of WW II in Sullivan County. Earl was a past member of the Farmersburg Masonic Lodge.
Earl is survived by five daughters, Janice Malone, Brazil; Karen Sampson, Farmersburg; Sandy Drake (Gregg), Kansas City, Missouri; Leanna Turner (Steve), Terre Haute; and Deanna Romine, DeLand, Florida; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie Henry (TRay), Michael Malone (Kristal), Marc Malone, Chris Sampson, Jeffrey Strain (Diana), Gini Sampson, Chad Turner (Kristen), Alicia Gatz (Mike), Ryan Turner (Angela), Shawn Strain (Shannon), and Kristi Higham (Andy); 21 great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Kalyn Henry; Tristen and Devon Malone, Tyler and Connor Strain; Ethan Hamblen (Amber); Haley Akers (Colby); Chase and Garrett Nichols; Brayden and Peyton Turner; Mallory and Parker Higham; Carson Turner, Ethan, Lannah, and Kylie Klaasen; Yancy Oakley; and Sierra, Alaina, and Royce Gatz, with another great-great grandchild due in April 2018; six great-great grandsons; Wyatt, Warren ,and Weston Hamblen; Bentley and Brody Akers; and Hoyt Hixon; with another great-great granddaughter due in November 2017. Earl is survived by twin sisters Laree Talcott and Lara (Norman) Borders of Port Orange, Florida; sisters-in-law Rosemary Huff, Norma Bartlett, Patty (Jay) Taylor and Sharon (Ben) Hamilton, and many nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, two daughters, Janet Chatfield and Joyce Strain, four sons-in-law, Don Chatfield, Max Strain, Steve Sampson, and Dennis Malone; brother Emmitt Romine and his infant twin sister, Earleen Romine.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2017, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel from noon to 3:00 p.m. with services scheduled at 3:00 p.m., Pastor Jeff Blansett officiating. Earl will be laid to rest at Farmersburg Westlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons ,with his granddaughters serving as honorary pallbearers.
