Obituary

Earl Eugene Slavens Jr, affectionately known as J.R. came into the world on his own terms a month early on July 4, 1975 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was born to Earl Eugene Slavens Sr. (Bud) and Marsha L Slavens (Schell). He passed away on December 21, 2025 in Sullivan County, Indiana.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Heather Slavens (Wodtke), two precious boys Janson and Jayden Slavens, his beloved mother Marsha Slavens, devoted sister Michelle Cates (Brad) along with nephews Trenton, Spencer, Tyler, Quintin (Joey), and Peyton Cates. Two step-children, Finch Ervin and Colton Ervin. Mother of his two boys, Michelle Slavens (Travelstead).  Additional survivors include several Aunts, Cousins, and Friends who adored him.

When J.R. entered a room, his presence was unmistakable and immediately felt by everyone around him. With his humor, quick wit, and playful joker ways, he had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease. His generous heart and kind soul guided the way he lived, always ready to help others without hesitation. In his final act of giving, J.R. shared the ultimate gift by becoming an organ donor, allowing his legacy of generosity to live on.

In his younger years, J.R. thrived in athletics, with sports coming naturally to him. His true standout talent was high school diving, where he distinguished himself and left a lasting legacy. In January 2022, he was honored as part of the 50th Anniversary Swimming and Diving Team and was proud to still hold diving records at Terre Haute South.

Growing up and into adulthood, he loved playing cards—especially Euchre—with family and friends, taking his boys out for Mexican food, and cruising country roads on his beloved Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. After a long day at work, he enjoyed coming home to a warm meal and his favorite TV shows, often superheroes specifically Spider-Man, action adventures, or following his favorite sports teams. He was known for saying—and debating—that players didn't make the team, the coaches did. Evenings cuddled on the couch with his wife were especially cherished.

Jr lived his life his own way often saying "it's JR way or the highway." He truly left an impression on everyone he met. To know JR was simply to love him.

Even as his health declined, J.R. remained determined to provide for and show up for his family. He was a proud member of Local 157 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, having joined in 2003, and often encouraged others to become part of the union he deeply believed in. Even on his most difficult days, his greatest concern was ensuring his loved ones were cared for and never had to worry.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Bud Slavens, Grandparents Earl and Dora Slavens, Shirley Martin, and Richard Schell along with beloved Uncles and Aunts along with cherished pets whom he adored over the years.

In lieu of flowers, a benefit account has been established to provide continued care for his sons, Janson and Jayden Slavens. Donations may be made directly through First Financial Bank.
