Earl R. Davis, 89 of Terre Haute, passed away at 8:20 PM on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Springhill Village, with family at his side. He was born February 18, 1924 to Irven L. and Edna Hunt Davis. He married his high school sweetheart Norma Jean (Jeanie) Keegan, and she survives. He is also survived by 2 daughters, Sandra L. Hayes & husband Bill of Riley, IN and Carla A. Gidorkis of Uniontown, OH. There are 6 grandchildren, Tracy Burnett Caudill of Indianapolis, Brian Caudill of Indianapolis, Matthew Hayes of Indianapolis, David Gidorkis of Stowe, OH, Laura Woods of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Jimmy Hayes & wife Rhonda of Jasonville. Other survivors include 5 great grandchildren, Brandi and Cassie Caudill, Luke Gidorkis, Elyssa Woods, and Alissa Hayes. His brother Max Davis of Terre Haute and sister Charlotte Elliott of Linton, IN also survive. Earl joined the Prairie Creek Church as a young boy. He was very patriotic, and always displayed our American Flag. He was a lifetime member of Lawton Byrum VFW Post # 972 and Past Commander and life member of Riley American Legion Post # 328. He loved family gatherings, camping, fishing, hunting mushrooms, gardening and grilling BBQ chicken over a wood fire pit. Earl loved spending winter months in Florida & did this for several years. He and his wife traveled through all US States, except Alaska. Most of these states he pulled an RV through and toured most of our National Parks. He didn't understand people going to foreign countries if they hadn't even seen all the beautiful places here in the USA. During WW II he was in the infantry and was proud to have been in Merrill's Marauder's outfit. It later became Mars Task Force. This was in the China, Burma, India Theater. Their duty was to keep the Burma Road open in the Himalaya Mountains & Earl was severely injured in Burma. In his early years he worked at his parents' grocery store in Prairie Creek. Later he was employed at Lima Tank Depot in Lima, OH. He later transferred to the Terre Haute Post Office, and retired from there, and enjoyed several years of retirement. He will be truly missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be held in DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM, with Rob Scheid officiating. Burial will follow in New Harmony Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 10, 2014 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Alzheimer's Association or Prairie Creek First Baptist Church.
