Hamrick
March 8, 1932 – October 21, 2017
Donald R. Hamrick (85) of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer's on Oct. 21,2017 at his residence in Rosegate Village, Indianapolis.
Donald was born March 8,1932 to Floyd and Kathryn Hamrick, younger bother to Robert J. and William J. Hamrick (all of whom proceeded him in death). He graduated from Wiley High School (1950) and from Indiana State Teachers' College (1956).
Donald served as a Naval Radar Specialist aboard the USS Harlan R. Dickson during the Korean War. He was a proud member of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans and enjoyed traveling to his ship reunions.
He married the love of his life, Joanna Gray, in 1954. Together they raised a family of four, living in Mississippi, Pennsylvania and New Jersey before retiring to Ozark, Arkansas and later returning to Indiana.
Donald began his career as a high school math teacher and also coached football and basketball, before deciding to become a Special Agent with the F.B.I. Donald worked for the F.B.I. from 1965 - 1985 during which time, he was selected to serve as a lead instructor for the F.B.I. National Academy.
Upon retirement, he contracted as a government consultant, specializing in counter-terrorism and hostage negotiations. During that time, he traveled to numerous countries around the world, instructing governmental and law enforcement agencies.
Last year, Donald was recognized as a Hoosier Hero, featured on FOX 59, and was honored by the Indiana Pacers, as an Indiana Hero.
In his spare time, Donald was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting. He also enjoyed square dancing with his wife, spending time with his grand-children, and bringing smiles to all with his wonderful sense of humor.
Donald is survived by his wife, Joanna; his children: Thoma L. Bastin (William); Donald R. Hamrick, Jr. (Licia); John M. Hamrick (Maureen); Raeanna K. Wagner (Todd); as well as his grandchildren: Jessica Willoby (Ryan), Chelsea Bastin; Kyle Hamrick, Johnny and Aidan Hamrick; and his great-grandchildren: Mason and Hayden Willoby.
Arrangements are being handled at DeBaun Springhill Chapel in Terre Haute, IN on Oct. 26, 2017. Calling is from 12 pm- 2 pm, with services immediately following. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Great Indiana Chapter.
