Dale Francis Oexmann, 73, of Terre Haute passed away at 11:55 p.m. June 17, 2013, in Avon after complications with pneumonia. Dale was a former professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Dale was born May 11, 1940, in Vincennes to Albert and Lovila (Konen) Oexmann. His beloved wife of 41 years, Paula Jane (Wuchner) preceded his death. He is survived by two daughters, Amy Lee and her husband Tony and Teresa Walker and her husband Joe, all of Plainfield; a foster son, David Hamilton of Terre Haute; four beloved grandchildren, Hanna, Brody, Emma and Macy and a sister, Mary Louise Hess and her husband Tom of Vincennes. Dale was also preceded in death by his parents. Dale received his Bachelor of Science from Rose- Hulman Institute of Technology, where he graduated summa cum laude, in 1962. He went on to receive his Masters at Lehigh University and began his doctorate work as well. He is a proud member of the Alpa Tau Omega fraternity, and later served on their alumni board. After graduation he worked at several consulting positions including a summer with the NASA Air and Space program. He accepted a teaching position at Rose-Hulman, where he was a well liked, yet tough, professor in the Computer Science and Mathematics department. Dale was invited to be a member of the elite high IQ society, Mensa. During his teaching career Dale participated in a yearlong sabbatical to teach at Newcastle University, in England. He was the co-author of 'Software Engineering across Computing Curricula. ITiCSE 1998' and also creator and holder of a US Patent titled: Vehicle Proximity Detection and Control Systems. Dale was also former owner of Butternut Hill Bed and Breakfast, Terre Haute, which he enjoyed renovating and filling with time period antiques with his wife Paula. Dale was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and served on the board of St. Patrick's for many years. He enjoyed traveling with his family and loved planning educational summer vacations each year for his wife and children. He introduced his children to fine arts at an early age. He also enjoyed gardening. Dale was a proud grandfather, where he encouraged a love of learning and his legacy will live on in their pursuits. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, and on Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Immediately following, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at Rose-Hulman in the faculty dining room In lieu of flowers the family has suggested that for those who desire, memorial contributions may be made in Dale's name to the Foundation for Prader- Willi Research, a foundation which funds research for Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects his youngest granddaughter Emma.
