Clifton "Corky" John Ashby was born in his parent's home on Pollack Avenue in Evansville, Indiana on January 14, 1933. He passed away while residing at Westminster Health Center in Terre Haute, Indiana on June 22, 2024.
He will be missed and is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Anne Marie Ashby. They had five daughters: Betty Shea (Rod), Carol Cameron (Harold), Teresa Kramer (Ron), Sara Schulz (Steve), and Angie McMillin (Kenny). Their grandchildren are Eric Grounds, Jessica Salstrom, Matthew Cameron, Emily Kelly-Cameron, Alicia Harris, Justin Kramer, Colt Daugherty, Marlana Jasso, Brooke Hall, Paul Schulz, Jenna Halfhill, Tara Merriman, and Nathan McMillin. They have been blessed by nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Corky is preceded in death by his parents, Clifton L. and Marie Ashby; brothers Vernon Ashby and Alvin Ashby; sisters Bertha Fox and Mary Williams; nephews Art Fox and Brent Williams and niece Karen Tanner.
Corky graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville, Indiana and began working for Pepsi Cola. This was his beginning of leadership in many careers. He worked at Servel. He attended the Indiana State Police Academy at IU and served on the Indiana State Police Department. Later, Corky worked for SIGECO for about 10 years. He worked at Peabody Coal Company until he retired. Corky was a partial owner of the Sandstone Saddlery in Ider, Alabama. He later returned home to join the Vigo County Sheriff's Department and developed the first Vigo County Sheriff's Posse, a mounted search and rescue patrol.
Corky was a former member and Grand Master of the Newburgh Masonic Lodge No. 174. He devoted time to both Warrick and Vigo County 4-H Horse and Pony. Corky's life-long loves were family, horses, helping others, children, woodworking, storytelling, and creative endeavors.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at DeBaun Funeral Home from 4 pm to 8 pm with a Masonic service at 7 pm. Another visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at DeBaun Funeral Home from 1 pm to 2 pm with a funeral service starting at 2 pm. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Reins of Life Therapeutic Riding at www.reinsoflife.org or the Vigo County CASA at vigocountycasa.net.
