Charles Francis
Dailey
April 17, 1949 – February 23, 2022
Charles Francis Dailey passed away on Wednesday evening, February 23, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. An almost life-long resident of Hammond, Indiana, he spent most of the last fifteen years of his life as a resident of Maryvale, a "55+" community in West Terre Haute. He had been a resident of Silver Birch Assisted Living since December of 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Francis and Barbara Ares Dailey, first cousins Louis Garr, formerly of St. Louis; Max Garr, formerly of Calumet City, Illinois; and several aunts and uncles. He leaves behind one sister, Joanna Dailey of Terre Haute; first cousins Barbara Garr (Tim) Doherty of Mission Viejo California, children and grandchildren; Anne Pirie (Kelley) McCready of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and daughter; and Cecil Ann Garr of Hammond, Indiana, and Tony Ares, Jr., both of Hammond, Indiana; and Bonnie Ares Royster and daughter, of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Gerald Charles Francis Dailey (his full baptismal name) was born on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949, in Hammond, Indiana. His early years were marked with an array of behaviors that dismayed his family. It was only in his fifties that he was diagnosed with "Asperger's syndrome" (now part of a broader category called "autism spectrum disorder.")
His parents did their best to support him through the years, and, at their deaths, his sister took over this supportive role as best she could. Charley (or Chuck, as he later preferred to be called) did his best to make his own way. Following graduation from Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, he subsequently earned two bachelor's degrees, one in sociology from Indiana State University and one in computer science from St. Joseph's Calumet College in East Chicago, Indiana.
His best and most peaceful years were the fifteen years he spent at Maryvale in West Terre Haute, next to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. His family would like to thank Tina and her staff, and the residents there, for their acceptance of a good guy with a subtle sense of humor who could still come across as somewhat unconventional. The family would also like to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for him so diligently in the ICU at Union Hospital during his last days.
Visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Church on March 3, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by the Mass of Resurrection. Burial will be the next day, at 12 p.m. Hammond time, at the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana.
